Therion - Musik megah dengan nada-nada mistis

Therion adalah band heavy metal Swedia yang didirikan oleh Christofer Johnsson pada tahun 1987. Kata "Therion"berasal dari Therion Yunani (θηρίον), yang berarti "Binatang," seperti Kitab Wahyu Kristen (Christian Book of Revelation). Namun, nama band adalah sebuah penghormatan kepada album Celtic Frost yang berjudul To Mega Therion.

Awalnya sebagai band death metal, mereka kemudian beralih menggabungkan unsur-unsur orkestra dengan musik metal mereka, menggunakan paduan suara dan musisi klasik, tidak hanya sebagai penambah tetapi juga sebagai bagian integral dari komposisi. Therion adalah band metal pertama dengan fitur orkestra yang hidup. Hal itu juga yang kemudian menjadi ciri khas dan mempengaruhi genre symphonic metal, disebut-sebut sebagai "the most adventurous metal band at present". Karena tema yang mereka ambil dalam memainkan musik mereka, genre mereka disebut sebagai "Opera Metal".

Musik Therion mengambil tema dari mitologi yang berbeda dan didasarkan pada konsep mulai dari okultisme, sihir dan tradisi kuno dan tulisan-tulisan. Sebagian besar lirik mereka yang ditulis oleh Thomas Karlsson, pemimpin dan pendiri aliran magis Dragon Rouge, dimana Johnsson menjadi anggota. Band ini telah mengalami banyak perubahan dalam line-up dan gaya sepanjang sejarah.

Therion sering menggunakan simbol-simbol visual di sampul album. Kebanyakan dari mereka adalah berdasarkan magick, okultisme, dan tema-tema Dragon Rouge.

Hendecagram, bintang Qliphoth, bintang berujung sebelas yang juga disebut Bintang Seth, adalah simbol yang paling sering digunakan. Bintang melambangkan sisi malam Qabalah. Hendecagram melambangkan magick Christofer dan lirik-lirik religius, dan telah diakui sebagai simbol band. Ada juga hubungan antara titik sebelas bintang dan inisiasi Dragon Rouge, karena 1 + 9 + 1 sama dengan 11 langkah. Simbol muncul pada hampir semua album meliputi (tidak hanya mencakup depan, juga di belakang dan / atau bagian dalam) sejak Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas (1993).

Simbol lain yang digunakan termasuk:

Concept of lyrics
1. Typhon was a monster in Greek mythology. According to Aeschylus, he fought all the gods of Olympus: Zeus defeated him and chained him under Mount Etna, from where his rage creates eruptions.
2. The Uthark System was used by runic mages.
3. Berik is the mythological chief of all Goths tribes: according to Jordanes, he departed from its motherland with three ships. The crews of the ships were the ancestors of the three Goth tribes.
4. Lemuria is a lost continent, like Atlantis.
